Interpretation of Aarti, Dhun, Stuti, Prarthna

Aarti has a very important role in the daily worship/ puja schedule. Normally Aarti is offered at various times of day, but the most generic schedule looks like follow:

  1. Mangala Aarti -- this is offered in the morning after waking up The Lord. This has to be offered definitely before sunrise, possibly by 4:30 am.
  2. Shreengar Aarti -- this is offered after the deities are dressed up for the day. Normally a mirror is placed before the deities for Themselves to observe Their sringar (dressup).
  3. Rajbhoga Aarti -- offered before the noon bhoga offering.
  4. Sandhya Aarti -- offered during the twilight hour.
  5. Shayan Aarti -- offered before deities are put to rest for the day.

According to the different religious practices, different numbers of Aarti offering are done.

Ingredients for Aarti Offering:

  1. Ghee Lamp
  2. Incense
  3. Conch Shell
  4. Piece of Cloth
  5. Flowers
  6. Chamara whisk
  7. Peacock feather fan
  8. Water for achaman

Every Sampradaya has a different way of performing Aarti ceremony. In our Sampradaya, the custom is to offer Aarti mostly using a ghee lamp with five wicks in it, and offering incense along with it. Some Sampradaya has been known to perform Aarti using all the above mentioned ingredients, and some with incense only. But the main principle is that Aarti should be performed according to the teachings of shastras and acharyas. One should not concate his own way of doing things.

Person offering the Aarti should be clean physically, and should be wearing washed clean clothes. It is also desirable to perform an achamana ceremony (sipping water three times while reciting mantra) before starting the Aarti. Also the ingredients for Aarti should be clean. One should first take the mental permission of his guru before performing the Aarti, and then concentrate fully on the deities to whom he is offering the Aarti. Generally, Aarti is offered by circling the Lotus Feet of the deities three times, then the middle portion of the deity's body (buttonhole) two times, the Lotus face one time and then circling the whole deity seven times. This is the standard method, though some different practices are also found in shastras.

If not all, we should try to have atleast three Aarti at our home temple -- mangala, sringar, and sandhya Aarti. Aarti has to be sung in the most melodious way, accompanied by musical instruments. It is also stated in Shikshapatri to perform sankirtan loudly accompanied by musical instruments. Sankirtan is the main dharma for this age and is very beneficial towards advancement in spiritual life. Also while offering prasadam and putting the deities at rest, the standard prayers should be recited.

Aarti (Jay Sada Guru Swami)

jaya sada guru swami, prabhu jaya sada guru swami
Shajananda dayalu, balavanta bahu nami. (jaya sada.)

charane shisha dhariya thi, dukh nakhya todi. (jaya sada.)

Narayan Nara bhrata dvija kula tanu dhari,

purushottam pragat nu jey darshan karshe,
kala karma thi chooti, kutumb sahita tarashe. (jaya sada.)

aa avashar Karunanidhi karuna bahu kidhi,
Muktananda kahe mukti, sugam kari siddhi. (jaya sada.)

This prayer was offered by H.H. Muktananda Swami to the Supreme Lord Shree Swaminarayan after his realization of Him as the Supreme Lord. Enlightened, Muktanada Swami composed this prayer at the Lotus Feet of the Lord. Since then this prayer is being recited as Aarti in our Sampradaya.

Interpretation of Aarti

jaya sada guru swami, prabhu jaya sada guru swami
Shajananda dayalu, balavanta bahu nami. jaya sada...

All glories, All glories to my eternal master! Swami Shajanda is very merciful, powerful, and has a lot of names.

Purport

The incarnation of Shree Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu is considered one of the most merciful incarnation. Previously in other incarnations, the demons or the irreligious people were killed by the incarnations but Shree Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu gave bhakti, the love of Godhead to fallen, irreligious and demoniac people. Jobanpagi is very good example of that. Excusing the offenses of Jobanpagi, He awarded him the best of all benedictions, prema. There are innumerable examples of Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu showering His mercy on fallen souls. This is His mercy.

Also there is no one equal to Him in power. Bhagvan is defined in shastras as one who posses all beauty, all power, all wealth, all renunciation, all knowledge. As Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Lord, Mukatananda Swami says that He is all powerful.

charana saroj tamara vandu kar jodi,
charane shisha dhariya thi, dukh nakhya todi. jaya sada...

With folded hands I pay my obeisances to the Lotus Feet of Shree Shajanada Swami. One’s all miseries are gone by simply surrendering to His Lotus Feet.

Purport

Here the Lords Feet are described as Lotus Feet. The lotus flower when in full bloom resembles Lords Feet. The foot is like the middle portionof the lotus flower and the fingers are the petals. Thus Mukatananda Swami says, that he is concentrating his consciousness on that Lotus Feet. The intention of concentrating on the Lotus Feet is a sign of humility. The devotee is always in the mood of being surrendered to the Lord. He thinks that he cannot exist with the intervention of Lord. But a non-devotee thinks that he himself is the doer of everything, and thus is being subjected to so many failures and success. For a devotee, everything is the wish of Lord Hari, who is always in charge of the happenings in the entire universe. This attitude of paying obeisances to the Lotus Feet, makes sure that pride or false ego do not creep into the devotee’s heart. A devotee never considers himself superior to the Supreme Lord. But one note is to be taken here that while interacting with other individuals it is preferable to judge the platform of the other person and then act accordingly. Being humble at all places might not bring out positive results. So the thumb rule is that we should try to behave in a manner in which we are able to always serve the Supreme Lord constantly. Just like Arjuna is satisfying the Lord by killing the enemies on the battlefield.

Narayan Nara bhrata dvija kula tanu dhari,
pamar patit udhaarya aganit nara nari. jaya sada...

The Divine brothers Nara-Narayan Dev has taken birth in the brahmin family as human beings. He is the liberator of helpless and fallen souls, uncountable men and women.

Purport

Nara-Narayan Dev were also cursed along with other devotees. Supreme Lord is above all the actions and reactions. He does not need to perform any activities as He is always complete. But for the pleasure of the devotees, He devises different scenes to appear on this planet. His main object of concentration is His devotees. Although He is equal to everyone He is more inclined towards His devotees, ‘paritranaya sadhunam’. He always wants all the suffering souls to attain His Supreme Dham where there is eternal happiness in the service of Supreme Lord and His devotees.

nitya nitya nautam lila karta avinashi,
adashat tirtha charana, koti gaya kashi. jaya sada...

Lord Swaminarayan, who is Avinashi, eternal, is daily performing new and pleasing pastimes. On His Lotus Feet reside all the pilgrimages, and they are more auspicious then millions of Gaya and Kashi tirthas combined together.

Purport

The pastimes of the Lord are very sweet and they are more sweeter as we hear them again and again. Swami says here that Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu performed various pastimes while He was among us in the human form, and they were all very sweet and beautiful, that they seemed to be new and fresh every time. Due to the presence of this quality in the pastimes of the Lord, it is known as lilamrita. Lilamrita means lila and amrita. Lila is pastimes and amrita is nectar. Nectar is always sweet and eternal. Also nectar gives us eternality. Thus the pastimes of Lord when heard are just like nectar for the conditioned souls, as they give him eternality - is residence in the abode of Lord, along with Him, in His service. Swami also sings about the glories of the Lotus Feet of the Lord. He says that one who is surrendered at The Lotus Feet of the Lord does not need visit different sacred places as all of them are present at His Lotus Feet.

purushottam pragat nu je darshan karshe,
kala karma thi chooti, kutumb sahita tarashe. jaya sada...

Whoever will have a glimpse of this Supreme Lord who is present amongst us today, will conquer over time and karma, and will cross over this ocean of misery along with his whole family.

Purport

It is said in Shreemad Bhagvatam and Shreemad Bhagvat Gita that Supreme Lord Himself is the devouring time.

mrtyuh sarva-haras caham, udbhavas ca bhavisyatam;
kirtih srir vak ca narinam, smritir medha dhrtih ksama.

I am all-devouring death, and I am the generating principle of all that is yet to be. Among women I am fame, fortune, fine speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience.

It is this time that brings old age and death. Time snatches away everything we posses at the time of death. We die every moment and the final blow is known as death. Still, knowing this simple truth, a human being is very attached to his belonging and is very lusty to enjoy them. In order to accumulate and protect these belongings, a person undergoes varieties of activities that is binding him to this material world. It is said that any activity that is not aimed at serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is binding us to this cycle of birth and death. Does this mean that a person should become inactive? Being inactive is not a possible state. Thus the only solution is that whatever we do, we should do that as a service to the Supreme Lord. We may indulge in this worldly matters but the only motive should be to satisfy Lord Hari. Thus raising family, working outside to get money, and everything else should be done as a service to Him. Lord Swaminarayan is further relieving the pain of this material world by giving us the protection of His mercy. Muktananda Swami says that just by having a glimpse of this merciful Lord, one can cross this vaste ocean of material existence, then what to say about the benefit of sincerely serving Him. But even to get a glimpse of this Supreme Lord is difficult till we are in the bodily conception of life.

aa avashar Karunanidhi karuna bahu kidhi,
Muktananda kahe mukti, sugam kari siddhi. jaya sada...

Lord Swaminarayan, who is the Ocean of Mercy, has bestowed a lot of mercy this time. And due to that I, Muktanada Swami, declare that attaining liberation has become very easy.

Purport

Human being is a very miserable animal. According to the scientific nomenclature, human beings are classified into the mammals and are a named 'Homo Sapiens Sapiens.' According to the Shasta, human being is considered an animal if there is no effort vested in self realization. ‘athato bhramha jigyasa.’ It is the asking of questions like -- who am I? Where have I come from? Where will I go? Who is god? What is my relation with god?, starts the journey of self realization. It is only at that time one leaves the animal platform and starts behaving on the human platform. Otherwise simply to eat, sleep, mate, and defend is exactly what an animal does. We are doing it somewhat sophisticatedly. Otherwise there is no difference. Also due to our association with the material nature since time immemorial, we are conditioned to enjoy our senses and live as an animal. Thus it is very difficult to understand the philosophy of self realization. It does not seem rational to us when all the others are enjoying their senses and living happily. Thus Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu is here, to save us, give us a chance to understand this very nice philosophy. He is the ocean of mercy. It is His mercy that we are in contact of this Sampradaya. Otherwise there are numerable other souls struggling to enjoy this life, and they are not aware of this very nice philosophy. So this Karuna-nidhi, Ocean of Compassion, is showering upon us His mercy, we should be very alert and try to grab it as much as possible. To attain the love of God is very difficult. Therefore, it is portrayed as a siddhi (great achievement) by Muktanada Swami. But by the mercy of Lord Shree Hari this has become very easy. Just by surrendering unto His Lotus Feet, we will be able to cross over this ignorance and come to the real platform of knowledge. Our acharyas have left for us an ocean of knowledge in the form of books. These books known as Shastas or granths, were written under the expert guidance of Shreeman Mahaprabhu. They are spotless. Now the ball is in our court. It is we who have to become spotless at heart, remove all the dirt of material association, grab and drink this nectar by eyes and ears. As a matter of fact, listening and singing/ chanting are the very first of the nine different was in which one can discharge devotional service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

‘sravanam, kirtanam Vishnuh-smaranam, pada-sevanam archanam,
vandanam, dasyam, sakhyam, atma-nivedanam. (Shreemad Bhagvatam, 7th canto, 5.23)

Prahlad Maharaj says: "hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities, paraphernalia, and pastimes of Lord Vishnu, remembering them, serving the Lotus Feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servant, considering the Lord ones best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him."

Just by chanting the mahamantra we can attain the Supreme Lord, for whom many yogis are performing austerity for thousands of years. Isn’t this the greatest mercy. Just by chanting the holy name of the Lord -- ‘Swaminarayan, Swaminarayan..’ and listening it attentively, our heart gets cleansed, ‘cetao darpana marjanam’ and our pains of material existence is relieved ‘ bhava maha davagni nirvapanam’. As soon as our heart is clear we will be able to sight the Supreme Personality of Godhead in his most munificent form smiling at us. He is known as Mukunda, the giver of mukti. For His devotees, mukti is very easily attainable. Mukti is the maid servant of bhakti. So Muktananda Swami says that by the mercy of Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu we will get bhakti, prema, love for the Supreme Lord, and what to talk about mukti.

Devotees of this Sampradaya recite this prayer daily after the Aarti with great love and devotion. This ashtak (as it is composed of eighth verses it is known as ashtak, ashta means eight), is inscribed also in Sansantgijivan (P.4, A.48). Due to the use of ‘venu, Vraja, Vrindavan, Gop-Gopi, Nanad’ etc. words, some people do not think this to be applicable to the Supreme Lord Shree Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu, and thus, they change some of the words of this ashtak, and they try to sentimentally prove their point of worshipping only the Supreme. But this only uncovers their ignorance of the Supreme and of the philosophy of Shree Swaminarayan Sampradaya. Lord Swaminarayan has Himself preached the principles of svarupadvaita. Gopalanda Swami, Nityananda Swami, Gunatitananda Swami, and many other great sanyasis of this Sampradaya have lived according to these principles. It is also found that Sadguru Gunatitananda Swami used to recite this ashtak every day after sandhya Aarti till he left this planet in V.S. 1923.

One should not have any other desires then to attain Shree Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu. Always have conviction of Shree Ghanshyam Maharaj as the Supreme Lord. Always perform the devotional service with understanding of the Supreme position of the Lord, and that devotion should be akantika, nothing other than Lord Shree Hari can attract us. We should be praying to the Lord for the association of His pure devotees. Also we should pray to Him that we would have His remembrance all the time, and His darshan all the time. A devotee prays humbly like this (as above). He calls out "O Merciful, O Master of devotees, O lover of devotees, please listen to what I have to say. O Ocean of mercy, by reciting various prayers I’m asking for the above things." One who is initiated in the disciplic succession of Shree Sahjananda Swami, should strictly adhere to the regulative principles laid in Shikshapatri. In that Shikshapatri, there are great eleven regulations. I am now going to describe them, so please listen to them with apt attention.

  1. Do not kill any insects or living beings
  2. Refrain from illicit sex
  3. No meat eating

Premananda Swami guarantees, that one who does the above will definitely go back home, back to Akshardham.

patito dvaranayatparam, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, whose beautiful lotus like eyes are filled with compassion, who completely protects the surrendered souls from all miseries, and who is always eager to liberate even the fallen and sinful souls.

nijatat tvapatha vabodhanam, janatayah savata eva durgamam;
iti chintya gruhit vigraham, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, who even the yogis find difficult to attain by their austerities, charity, yoga, sacrifices, etc. So it is extremely difficult for common people to understand Him, (meaning Lord is not attained by our mere endeavors, but is attainable by His cause less mercy). Thus knowing this, out of compassion He took this human form.

vidhisham bhumukhaira nigraham, bavapatho dhipari bhramakulam;
apidhar yamano naraprabham, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

It is very difficult even for the demigods to control the mind and senses. Being in this conditioned form of life since time immemorial, our mind has become very agitated for sense enjoyment, and has become very unstable. It is impossible to understand the Supreme Lord by this kind of mind.

Thus I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, who knowing this, out of compassion accepted human form (naraprabham) for our benefit.

nijapada payo jakirtanam, satatam syad vavajiva gocharam;
iti yah kurute kratustavam, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, who is performing many festivals and sacrifices in order to enable us remember His lotus Feet, remember His nectarine pastimes and perform His sankirtan nicely.

bahirik shanalok manusham, nija dattam bakadar shinam Harim;
bhajaniya padam jagadgurum, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, whose Lotus Feet are the object of worship for the devotees who has attained His mercy. Although when observed grossly, He seems to be performing normal human pastimes. Shree Sahjanada Swami is the spiritual master of this entire universe.

sharana gatapaapa avartatam, ganayitva na tadiya sadagunam;
anumapya atulam himanyate, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, who not seeing the mountain-size sins of the surrendered soul, appreciates the smallest good qualities as atulya (atulya means one that does not any comparison). Thus, He is never looking at the bad qualities of soul but only looking at the good qualities.

bhavavaa ridhimoksha sadhanam, gururaj pragat svasangamam;
pragati krutavan krupa vasah, Sahajandagurum bhajae sada.

I always worship my Gururaj Shree Sahjanada Swami, who by His mercy has made easy for the conditioned soul to swim across this ocean of material existence, who is the king amongst all spiritual masters, and who is lovingly bound to His devotees.

Bhagavan! kripaya tvaya kritam, janataya mupakar amidrasham;
kshamate pratikar tumatrakah, kurute deenajanastatoadjalim.

O Lord! Just for the benefit of the conditioned souls You have accepted this human form. No one in this material existence is capable of repaying You for this mercy. Thus, I Dinanath Bhatt humbly stand before You with folded hands, offering obeisances from my heart.
